Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I get feedback on my audition so that
I can learn my strengths and weaknesses?
- I received an invitation to one of the baroque
ensembles. Can I hold a place in one of the
other orchestras until I receive confirmation
from the baroque ensemble? Can I do both?
If the baroque ensemble is your child’s
first choice but they are still interested
in the larger orchestra to which they
have been assigned, we advise that you
accept a place in the larger orchestra
until you hear confirmation from the baroque
ensemble. We simply ask that you let us
know as soon as you do hear from the baroque
ensemble if your child will not be participating
in the other orchestra.
If your child has been accepted into two
orchestras which rehearse at the same
time, you will have to choose only one
of them - it's simply not possible to
participate in two ensembles that meet
simultaneously
- My child didn't get into _____ is there a
way for them to audition again?
We allow a limited number of live reauditions
in September. These must be authorized
by the Director of the Preparatory School.
If you would like to request a reaudition,
please contact Elisabeth Christensen,
echristensen@newenglandconservatory.edu
or 617.585.1128.
- Why was my child placed into 2 different orchestras?
Can they participate in both?
If the two orchestras rehearse at different
times, you may choose to participate in
either one or both.
- What is the age range for the orchestras?
The Orchestra Descriptions page provides
information about the age range of most
students in each ensemble. Please note
that the ages given are merely a reflection
of the ages of most of the students in
the orchestra. Orchestra assignments are
made by playing level, not by age.
- Is the music sent to the students before the
first rehearsal?
Music is distributed at the first rehearsal,
not mailed out beforehand.
- My child was accepted into the String Training
Orchestra but it doesn't say 8AM or 9AM, where
will they be placed?
Seating auditions will take place in September.
Following that audition you will be told
in which String Training Orchestra (8:00
or 9:00) your child will be placed.
- I was asked to do a YPO fall audition, does
this mean that I have to choose now to be
in YS or YPO?
In a limited number of cases students
may be asked to reaudition for YPO in
the fall. If you would like to guarantee
a place in orchestra for the fall you
should accept your spot in YS and prepare
the YS seating audition materials. Should
you be accepted into YPO you will be able
to adjust your registration accordingly.
- Are students ever accepted directly into higher
orchestras?
We consider all applicants for all orchestras,
regardless of prior participation at NEC.
- What is my username and password?
- Do all the ensembles have seating auditions
in September?
The large orchestras all hold seating
auditions in September. Most other ensembles
do not. If your child accepts a place
in Children’s Chorus, Youth Chorale,
String Chamber Orchestra, any of the baroque
ensembles, or either of the Massachusetts
Youth Wind Ensembles they should simply
register and attend the first rehearsal
in September
- I would like to do also audition for chamber
music, jazz, or private lessons, what do I
do?
Those auditions will be held in September.
Please contact the main Prep Office after
August 15, at 617-585-1130 and speak to
the Office Manager.
- I am an NEC at Walnut Hill student, how do
I schedule my seating audition time in September?
Please contact the Director of Music at
the Walnut Hill School 508-650-5024.
- If my child is a returning student do they
need to prepare two contrasting pieces along
with the excerpt for September seating auditions?
YES! (note: excerpts are only required
for those students taking a seating audition
for YRO, YS, or YPO. Seating audition
excerpts can be found on the large ensembles
page here.)
